Retro Shymkent: the city as its residents remember it

Retro Shymkent is remembered as a city of trams, leafy streets, and quiet courtyards. Until the early 2000s, the tram system was one of the city’s defining symbols: routes ran along Tauke Khan Avenue, Kazibek Bi Street, and connected residents with markets, factories, and educational districts. Before operations ceased due to worn-out tracks, the rhythmic clatter of the tram was part of everyday life.

The city was always known for its greenery. Since Soviet times, Shymkent was considered one of the greenest cities in the south: apricot, mulberry, and grape vines grew in almost every yard, while the shade of poplars and elms provided relief from the summer heat. Many still fondly recall how entire streets were covered by thick, cool canopies of trees.

Markets played a central role in the life of old Shymkent. The main city bazaar — now the area around “TSUM” — was the heart of local trade. People came there for spices, dried fruits, dairy products, vegetables, and fabrics. The bustling sounds and vibrant atmosphere of the bazaar reflected the authentic eastern character of the city.

Shymkent of the past was also a major industrial hub. The chemical plant, the phosphorus plant, and the textile factory provided thousands of jobs. Many early residential districts developed around these enterprises.

Cultural life had its own distinct flavor. Cinemas such as “Kazakhstan,” “Shugyla,” and “Avrora,” as well as city cultural centers, the drama theater, and the opera and ballet theater were important cultural venues for residents.

Childhood in retro Shymkent was shaped by the courtyards: children played football, rode Aist and Orlyonok bicycles, gathered mulberries, and in the evenings watched movies on Horizon and Rubin televisions. Neighbors knew each other well, and the courtyard felt like a small community.

Retro Shymkent is a city remembered for its factories, green streets, trams, and a strong sense of neighborhood friendship. It was a place with fewer cars, more shade, and a warm simplicity that people still recall with affection.
