Lake Balykty – The Emerald Gem of the Sairam-Ugam National Park

Just an hour’s drive from Shymkent lies one of the most picturesque places in southern Kazakhstan — Lake Balykty. Small in size yet breathtakingly beautiful, it captivates with its crystal-clear waters, green hills, and an atmosphere of peaceful serenity rarely found elsewhere.

The name Balykty translates from Kazakh as “the lake with plenty of fish,” and it lives up to its name. Thanks to the transparent water, visitors can easily spot fish swimming near the surface. However, fishing is strictly prohibited, as the lake is part of the Sairam-Ugam National Park and is protected by the state.

Swimming in the lake is only for the brave — even in midsummer, the water remains icy cold, fed by underground springs. Its depth is equally impressive — around 25 meters, which is quite significant for such a small body of water.

Visitors can rent a boat and glide across the calm surface of the lake, taking in the mountain scenery and fresh air. On the shore, there are pavilions and barbecue areas, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing picnic with friends or family.

How to get there

Lake Balykty is located in the Turkistan region, within the Tole Bi branch of the Sairam-Ugam National Park, just beyond the village of Zhaskeshu.

Distance from Shymkent — approximately 65 kilometers.

Coordinates: 42.5673749, 70.1560320

Balykty is more than just a natural attraction — it’s a place where you can reconnect with nature, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and rediscover the quiet beauty of simplicity.
