The Citadel is the oldest territory of the city, covering the I-XIX centuries

An archaeological object of the Republic of Kazakhstan included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Monuments of local importance. Excavations from 2003 to 2004 proved the 2,200-year history of the city. Archaeologists have conducted an еxpertise of several stages of the city’s development. The castle (Citadel) was a fortress protecting the city from the enemy.

The current preserved part of the city is designated as Shahristan and the citadel.
The citadel is the oldest territory of the city, covering the I-XIX centuries, where the ruler’s palace, the commander’s house, and the shopping area used to be located. Today, the complex is an open-air museum.
